Happily Ever Endings: Possession by Elana Johnson

What is it?
Happily Ever Endings was created by Amber of Down The Rabbit Hole due to the relatively frustrating feeling one has when it has been a while since they have read a book and now they are unsure of how it ended. This tends to be a problem when that book is part of a series. AND SO... this fabulous idea was brought to life. Summary:
Vi knows the Rule: Girls don't walk with boys, and they never even thinkabout kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn...and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi's future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.

But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they're set on convincing Vi to become one of them...starting by brainwashing Zenn. Vi can't leave Zenn in the Thinkers' hands, but she's wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous--everything Zenn's not. Vi can't quite trust Jag and can't quite resist him, but she also can't give up on Zenn.

In the beginning of the novel we are introduced to the main character Violet, appropriately nicknamed Vi. She lives in the Goodgrounds with her mother, where she has spent most of her time since her father disappeared and other sister Tyson died  breaking rules. Violet and her boy-next-door boyfriend Zenn get caught walking together (against the rules of Violet's dystopic society) and Vi is immediately taken into custody and told that she must go to court and face Thane, the Director.

She is sentenced to be shipped of to the "Badlands," which she has been taught to be a horrible place filled with criminals, and "tagged." She is placed in a cell with a "baddie" named Jag who makes her question everything that she had been taught about those from the Badlands. Vi starts to notice there is a familiar voice  that keeps interjecting snide remarks in her head.

Early the next morning, Vi is taken from the cell and "tagged," or had a tracking/control unit placed around the inside of her wrist. She gets back to the cell with enough time to warn Jag and together they escape the prison and set out on a journey to the Badlands. Vi conveniently forgets to mention that she has already been tagged. The pair stop to get supplies at a farm house where Jag discovers a book about the technology of the Goodies. Vi notices that the picture of the author on the back of the book is Lyle Schoenfeld; Vi's father.

Violet and Jag part ways after an argument and Violet is left to try and cross the border alone, tagged and all. When she arrives she has a short, angst-filled reunion with Jag before they are confronted by the same "Thinkers" that attacked them back in the "Goodgrounds" during their escape. They once again flee the "Goodies" and make an escape into the forest taking refuge in Jag's old childhood treehouse. They awake to Zenn, who is now working for the thinkers, discovering their location by a chip that was placed in the ring that he gave to Violet for her birthday.

Violet seems to have the ability to hear dreams, overhears Jags and discovers that Jag is in fact the leader of the rebellion against the "Thinkers" and that Zenn was Jag's inside man and best friend before ultimately jumping ship and betraying the rest of the rebellion. It is also revealed that Jag blames Zenn for the death of Jag's older brother Blaze.

After many confrontations with the technology of the world, Vi realizes that she has the ability to control both people and technology with her mind, and the Jag has the same ability but only with his voice. It is now clear to Vi, that the Thane and the Thinkers want her to join them and help them control the rest of the world.

Vi finally figures out how she knows the voice that has been antagonizing her in her head. It's her father. She then hears the same voice while she is in the Tech lab being held captive by Zenn and the rest of the "Thinkers." The voice belonging to Thane, the villian. Vi then discovers that Thane had created another life where he fathered Violet and her sister to create powerful thinkers.

Violet and Jag escape to Seaside, the freest Island society where they are told they will be protected, in search of a Ranger named Gavin who is supposedly able to take the tracker ring off of her finger and untag her wrist. When they arrive to see Gavin, it is revealed that Gavin and Vi's deceased sister are one in the same.

Vi and Gavin are about to escape when it is revealed that Jag is giving himself up so that the girls can go free. Vi, not being entirely cool with that plan, beams to Jag and Thane in the Badlands where Zenn is also waiting. Thane gives Vi a choice, choose to go against him and he kills Jag or join him and stay with Zenn. It is in this scene that we see how truly brainwashed Zenn is and how much he is trying to fight it because of his love for Vi. Ultimately, she chooses to save Jag and gives him and the rest of the key members a the rebellion a clean getaway with the promise that he will soon come looking for her.

Thane uses his mind control methods to wipe the memory of Jag out of his daughters brain. She then willingly is sent to "Freedom," the land where those with gifts are trained to become "Thinkers." In the last scene, we see a clueless Vi who outwardly seems very happy with her long time boyfriend Zenn, but has constant visions and dreams on a strange boy that she has never seen. The only thing that she knows about him, is that he owns her heart.
