Happily Ever Endings: Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown

What is it?
Happily Ever Endings was created by Amber of Down The Rabbit Hole due to the relatively frustrating feeling one has when it has been a while since they read a book and now they are unsure of how it ended. This tends to be a problem when that book is part of a series. AND SO... this fabulous idea was brought to life. Obviously, there will be spoilers...so if you haven't read the book... don't read the post. There is also a mega list of posts which you can find over at Down The Rabbit Hole. Link on sidebar.

WARNING: THIS IS NOT A REVIEW AND DOES CONTAIN SPOILERS. IF YOU HAVE NOT READ LIES BENEATH DO NOT READ THE REST OF THIS POST.

Title: Lies Beneath
Author: Anne Greenwood Brown
Summary:
Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge. They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake. Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistable good looks and charm on ususpecting girls. Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him.

At the start of the book, Calder (merman) is called back to join his three mersisters: Maris (the head of the family), Pavati (the sexy sister), and Tallulah (Calders closest sister), in Lake Superior. The reader finds out that the four blame the death of their mother on Tom Hancock who was freed by their mother on the condition that he would then give up his baby to her. He refused and ran away causing the mother to be strangled in a set of nets as she carelessly pursued them.

Years later, the merfamily still searches for Jason Hancock, the baby that Tom had agreed to give up. They find him as he is moving his family from Minneapolis, back up to Lake Superior. The sisters decide that Calder is to befriend one of the sisters to gain the families trust, and then lure Jason Hancock to the water where the sisters will kill him.

After Calder has been introduced to the family, Sophie (the younger of the Hancock sisters) immediately attaches herself to Calder while the older sister, Lily, and her two newly made friends, Jack and Gabrielle remain leery of the new stranger. However, about halfway into the book, they begin to fall in love. This complicates the plan to kill her father.

Lily discovers Calder's secret merman identity. While Calder and Lily are sleeping in a hammock, Pavati tells Calder that Maris has kidnapped Sophie and decided to take a daughter instead of Jason Hancock as payment for the debt.Calder rushes to her rescue only to discover that Pavati was sent to lure Calder away from Lily. Maris traps Calder in an underwater cage where she, like the true villain that she is, reveals that Tallulah is off to kill Lily, not Sophie. Calder is hurt by Tallulah's betrayal, when he then figures out that his mersister may have some not so innocent feelings towards him, that he very much does not return.

When Tallulah finds Lily, Lily is willing to sacrifice herself so that her family will be left alone. She jumps off a cliff into the water where Tallulah begins to drown her. Calder listening to his sisters thoughts is enraged and escapes his cage only to reach the scene of action just as Lily's friend Jack (and Pavati's old play toy), shoots Tallulah freeing Lily. Jason Hancock shows up and jumps into the ocean to save his daughter. As he reaches the water the reader is told that his legs weave together to reveal a mertail.

After all the action has ended, Maris finds Calder and reveals that she is unaware of both Tallulah's death, and the fact that Lily is still alive. Calder questions her about why Maris lied to Calder about Jason Hancock being a merman. She reveals that Tom Hancock originally fled because he did not want to give his son  back to their mother. We discover that Jason Hancock is in fact, Maris, Pavati, Tallulah and Calder's brother, which explains him wanting to return to Lake Superior.

In the last few pages of the novel Calder leaves Lily with the promise that he will return for her after the migration but for now he must leave her.
